PEERS’-NET is the Peer Educators Network of the Community Based Centre for Partners in Health (COMBACEPH) based in the School of Nursing, University of Ghana. COMBACEPH has over the years continued to provide quality training on Peer Education on Sexual and Reproductive Health through its Youth Friendly Services (YES). COMBACEPH Trained Peer Educators (CTPE’s) who are adequately oriented and trained in YES forms PEERS’-NET.
PEERS’-NET seeks to ensure that Youth Friendly Services on Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) is brought to the doorsteps of the youth especially students and other youth in the immediate environs of the University of Ghana.
VISION OF PEERS’-NET
Promotion of positive sexual behaviour and increased access to youth friendly services to enhance the national efforts to reduce the prevalence of HIV and other sexual and reproductive health problems of young people especially in and around the vicinities of the University of Ghana)
STRATEGIES
The PEERS’-NET employs a multifaceted approach in concepts developing and programmes planning and implementing with methodologies (combined approached matrix). These PEERS’-NET strategies to enable participants and audiences to identify problems, set priorities and address needs with cost-effectiveness methods. The concepts focused on;

COMBACPH has reviewed and developed curriculum for the training of peer educators to provide YES
Clinic-based Services
COMBACPH has established a well-equipped on-site facility within the premises of the School of Nursing, Legon, for PEERS’-NET to provide YES on Reproductive Health. The package of onsite YES is as follows;
- Information/Counseling on Sexuality, abstinence, safe sex, reproductive health
- Contraceptive/Protective method of provision to sexually active young people
- STI clinical diagnosis and syndromic management
- Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) on HIV
- Physical examination and diagnostic testes
- Post-abortion counseling and contraception
- Counseling on sexual violence and abuse and referral for services
- Immunizations
- Hotline Services
Outreach Services
Outreach delivery of YES is promoted as a back up to the static service delivery approach. This involves the identification and setting up of outreach sites at points where youth congregate and therefore feel comfortable in the environment. These include Senior Secondary Schools and Tertiary Institutions.
Palliative and Home-based Care
PEERS’-NET provide counseling as well as general medical services during home visits to clients with chronic diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Opportunity Illnesses and cancer
OPERATIONAL FOCUS
The PEERS’-NET developed and undertakes programmes that enable participants and audiences to identify problems, set priority, and needs addressing which act as catalyst for actions with appropriate decision-making with burden-alleviation and cost-effectiveness analysis. The programmes focused on HIV/AIDS, reproductive health, general health, human rights, education and career enhancement and promoting oneness culture.
PEERS’-NET build the capacity of youth and promote awareness on their reproductive health and developmental challenges; enabling them to serve as agents of development through facilitated collaboration among partners in the communities.
ACTIVITIES
- Embark on networking with youth groups, community based organizations, non-governmental organizations and other institutions.
- Planning and implementing effective programmes and projects involving youth in and out of school, religious bodies, traditional authorities, others who promote reproductive health and developmental challenges, cultural education (inter-cultural exchange/tours/excursions), formal and non-formal education.
- Organize systematic seminars, workshops and campaigns focusing on current situations.
MEMBERSHIP
Membership of PEERS’-NET is open to all individuals, youth clubs and groups, non-governmental organizations, civic educators, professional associations, community-based-organisations amongst others who work in line with its vision.
However students and youth groups with patrons and elected executives who are trained by COMBACEPH will be inaugurated as a club member of the network. An individual can register with an inaugurated club of the network.
