The Nursing institutions since its establishment in 1963 had been involved in some health activities on the campus. Thus, promoting positive sexual behaviour of students and staff has been the aim of our founding leaders. The Late Prof. Ayodele Akiwumi had wanted to turn the Staff Lounge into a family planning clinic but the idea was abandoned because of our staffing situation. Again when Mrs. Margaret Osei-Boateng became the Head of Department, the idea came up and she went further to conduct a study on “Students’ Knowledge, Attitudes and Perceptions on Family Planning”. Unfortunately, this could not materialize due to certain constraints.
THE NEED
The need for such a Centre became even stronger for the following reasons;
- The adoption of Adolescent Reproductive Health Policy.
- Formation of National Adolescent Reproductive Health Policy.
- Department of Nursing becoming a School.
- The increasing number of the student population, the composition being made up of adolescents, youth and matured people. (Both sexually active and non-sexually active).
- Overstretched university accommodation or facilities leading to overcrowding.
- Exposure to foreign cultures, mass media and feeling of freedom from parental or housemistresses control.
- The insurgence of HIV/AIDS.
The centre provides the following services for its clients; physical assessment, laboratory check-ups, counselling, immunizations, hotline counselling services, peer education, clinical care, health education and promotion, palliative care for chronically ill patients i.e. Cancer and AIDS patients through home based care, school health services, reproductive research and snack bar services. These services cut across all the four departments of the School i.e. Adult Health, Mental Health, Community Health and Maternal and Child Health.
MODE OF DELIVERY OF THE SERVICES
Staff and students run the centre. It is opened to clients from 9 am to 8 pm, Mondays to Fridays.
In the various halls of residence, there are peer educators to give immediate assistance during the period when the centre is closed.
